A: Proliance Surgery Center at Valley is a joint venture between Proliance Orthopedic Associates and UW Medicine Valley Medical Center. This partnership combines the surgical volume and orthopedic expertise of one of the region’s largest orthopedic groups with the clinical oversight and resources of a major academic health system. It gives us the best of both worlds — the efficiency and specialization of a dedicated surgical center with the credibility and infrastructure of a major hospital partner.

A: We discuss the right surgical setting with each patient during the preoperative planning process. Factors like your health history, the complexity of the procedure, and your home situation all factor into that decision. Some patients are better served at a hospital, and we make that recommendation honestly. For patients who are good candidates, the surgery center almost always provides a better experience.

A: We opened in December 2021 and received the Becker’s ranking for knee replacement volume just 18 months later. That ramp-up reflects the volume and experience of the Proliance Orthopedic Associates surgical team, the infrastructure we built from day one, and a patient demand for outpatient joint replacement that the greater Seattle area didn’t previously have a dedicated facility to serve.

A: Yes. Proliance Surgery Center at Valley is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), one of the leading accrediting bodies for outpatient surgical facilities in the United States. We are also recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a 2025 Best Ambulatory Surgery Center for orthopedic and spine care.

A: Our primary focus is total and partial knee replacement, total hip replacement, and complex knee sports medicine surgery including ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair and transplantation, cartilage restoration, osteotomy, and patella stabilization. We also perform spine and other orthopedic procedures across our six operating rooms.

A: Both. While we’re nationally recognized for our joint replacement volume, a significant portion of our cases are advanced sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures — ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair and transplantation, cartilage restoration, patella stabilization, and complex multi-ligament reconstruction. We have current-generation arthroscopic imaging, fluid management systems, and the full range of modern implants to support these cases.

A: Laminar airflow is a ventilation system that moves filtered air in a controlled, unidirectional stream across the surgical field, continuously displacing airborne particles away from the wound. In joint replacement surgery, where a foreign implant is being placed, infection prevention is paramount — even a small infection can be catastrophic. Laminar airflow systems are associated with lower rates of deep joint infection, which is why they’re used in the best orthopedic centers in the world.

A: For the majority of our joint replacement patients, yes. The transition to outpatient surgery has been one of the most meaningful changes in orthopedics over the last decade, and we’ve built our protocols around making it safe and comfortable. Most patients walk with a physical therapist before they leave, and go home within a few hours of finishing in the recovery room.

A: Generally, patients who are in good overall health, have well-controlled medical conditions, have reliable support at home, and are motivated to participate in same-day physical therapy tend to do very well in an outpatient setting. We review each patient individually — age and BMI alone don’t disqualify someone. The goal is to match the right patient to the right setting.

A: Yes, for appropriate candidates. The research is clear that outcomes at high-volume ambulatory surgery centers are comparable to — and in some metrics better than — hospital-based joint replacement. Our infection control infrastructure, laminar airflow OR technology, and specialized orthopedic team are built specifically for this type of case. The key is patient selection: not everyone is a candidate for outpatient joint replacement, and we screen carefully.

A: For orthopedic procedures, the data suggests yes — particularly for infection risk. Research shows that surgical site infection rates in dedicated orthopedic ambulatory surgery centers are significantly lower than in hospitals, with some studies reporting hospital infection rates up to ten times higher than in accredited ASCs. The reasons include stricter patient selection, no overnight stays, a controlled single-specialty environment, and staff whose entire focus is orthopedic cases. That said, patients with significant medical complexity may still be better served in a hospital setting, which is why we screen carefully.

A: An ambulatory surgery center, or ASC, is a licensed and accredited outpatient surgical facility where procedures are performed and patients go home the same day. Unlike a hospital, our center is entirely focused on orthopedic surgery — which means the staff, equipment, and workflows are all optimized for that one specialty. For the right patient, this translates to a better experience, lower infection risk, and faster recovery.
